Green Lighting

In today’s society, there is a big push on going green. What exactly does that mean? In a nutshell, going green is using clean and renewable energy sources in the production of, and delivery of everyday products. To go green, we do things that will protect our planet, and that are environmentally friendly. For an energy source to be renewable, it means that as the energy is expended, it is naturally replaced or replenished. Some renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal heat, and ocean tides. These sources of energy are automatically replenished as they are used up. To help preserve this Earth that sustains us, we need to look for more green lighting solutions. There are many available to us today. There are also several renewable and alternative forms of fuel from which we can choose.

Going Green Through Wind Energy

The use of wind energy has increased significantly over the past 20 to 30 years. Windmills have been used for centuries to draw drinking water from below the ground. Windmills are more productive in some areas of the country than they are in others. Some parts of the country are by nature windier. These windy places are more ideal for the use of wind power. Wind is simply air in motion, which is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by the sun. The sun’s heat is absorbed differently by various types of land and water masses.

There is actually a daily wind cycle. During the day, air that is above the land heats up more quickly than the air that is above water. As the air over the land expands and rises, heavier cooler air rushes in to replace it. This process creates the wind. In the evenings, the process is reversed. The air cools more rapidly over a land mass than over water.

Similarly, atmospheric winds that circle the earth are created as a result of the land being heated more by the sun near the Earth’s equator than that which is nearer to the North or South Poles. As the wind blows, large windmills are used to generate electricity as the vanes or blades of the windmill turn. As the blades turn, the generator that is connected within the windmill produce an electrical current. The largest wind turbines can generate up to 6MW of power. To put one of these large windmills in perspective, a modern fossil fuel power plant generates between 500 and 1,300MW of power. One of the biggest disadvantages of wind power generation is their lack of aesthetic value.

Going Green Through Solar Energy

Solar energy is derived solely from the sun. It is estimated that the energy that is absorbed by the Earth’s surface in one hour is enough to power everything on the Earth for a whole day. So, there is more than enough solar energy to go around. The key with solar energy, as with any form of energy, is harnessing it. Technology continues to improve when it comes to photovoltaic solar cells. Solar energy is now used to power a variety of products, many of which are solar lights. Solar panels are found on many homes and businesses, especially in the sunnier areas of the world. California and Florida are two of the sunniest states, and therefore more solar power is generated within those areas. It is possible to install solar systems even in the most remote parts of the world. Off-grid solar power systems can be installed in areas where electrical wires can't be run, or where it is too expensive to do so.

Solar products are also much greener than using regular electrical power, because there is no fossil fuel involved in the production of solar energy. Much of our electrical power used today is generated from coal. In fact, about half of all the energy used in the United States is derived from coal. There are actually several advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. One great advantage of solar energy is that no electrical cords are needed to power solar products, including solar lights. These solar lights not only green, but they are so much easier to install.

Green Lighting Around The Home

For home solar lights, all you have to do is place them where you want them, and the sun does the rest. The variety of solar lights is huge. There are solar pathway lights, solar garden lights, solar spot lights to accent trees, solar address signs, solar deck lights, solar gazebo lights; and the list goes on. There are even special Christmas solar lights that save so much time and energy installing; not to speak of the electricity they save. You can even buy a solar wreath to hang on your front door.

You can get solar lights to float in a pond or swimming pool. If you want to add color to your back yard you can get solar hummingbirds, solar butterflies, or solar dragonflies. These lights all rotate from one color to another.

When it comes to solar hot water systems, they typically don’t use electricity to heat, but are powered by solar energy. In this case, solar heat is used. Believe it or not, there are also solar air conditioners that are powered by photovoltaic cells.

Green Through Solar Systems

If you want to go all out, you can have a solar power system installed on your home. If you have enough solar panels, you can actually power your whole home. With the government incentives, these solar systems are much more affordable. Check out all of the tax incentives available. Often, at least 50% of your cost is subsidized. There are some solar systems now that have no out of pocket expense to you as a home owner. There are other programs where the solar company installs the system on your home free of charge, where you are locked into one low monthly fee.

Green With Alternative Vehicles

When it comes to alternative vehicles, there are solar cars, electric cars, and even natural gas cars for sale. There is currently only one manufacturer offering a natural gas car for sale. That company is Honda. That cng car, the Civic GX has been on the market for over a decade. Natural gas is a much greener fuel than gasoline or diesel. It is the cleanest burning fuel around. There are a lot of trucking companies that are currently switching to natural gas vehicles for sale. Major companies such as UPS are now converting to natural gas vehicles.

When you are looking for green lighting solutions, not only can you save money on those systems, but you will be protecting the environment from harmful pollution.
